Devenish Island, meaning ‘ox island’ is located in Lower Lough Erne a few moments outside of Enniskillen Town. The island is just over a mile long, and less than a mile in width. The island is currently owned by the Kilvarock Christian Trust. When travelling from the Belle Isle Estate you can find the island by travelling north through Enniskillen to Trory Point. This is the most common place to get a ferry across to the island.
Devenish Island has an old monastic site which features a 30 metre Romanesque decorated round tower dating back to twelfth century as well as the walls of the Oratory of Saint Molaise who established the monastery in the 6th century after travelling to Devenish Island from Croagh Patrick on a pilgrimage.
There are three churches on the island; Mo-Laisse’s House, Teampull Mór and St Mary’s Augustinian Priory. These date back to the 12-13th century, 13th century and 15th century respectively. Each church is uniquely and intricately designed with each varying in size. There are also several hundred loose architectural fragments on the site and among them are over 40 stones from an otherwise lost, richly-decorated Romanesque church.
The monastic remains including churches, round tower etc. are State Care Historic Monuments in the townland of Devenish, in Fermanagh District Council area. Additionally, the monastic site and the rath are scheduled historic monuments.
