70th Anniversary of D-Day Celebrations

Remembered at Crom Castle, Marking 70 years of the US Army being stationed in County Fermanagh.

In the build up to D-Day on 6th June 1944, a quarter of County Fermanagh’s population consisted of American military personnel based in 20 garrisons all around Lough Erne, one of which was Belle Isle Estate.

From the 18th January 1944, 644th Tank Destroyer Battalion (XV Corps) was based at Belle Isle, there is not a huge amount of information on how many troops where stationed at Belle Isle or the period of time they spent here.

Pictured below is Estate Manager Matthew Stuart being presented with the commemorative plaque at Crom Castle last Friday.
